Sun-Kissed Children

The sun’s rays hugged our backs. Sand ran through our toes and the sound of the wind made the children’s laughter seem faint.

The beach was always a place to reset. I rarely came because I’d never been intrigued by even the most fascinating elements of nature. The times I did come, my mind would travel wherever the wind did. The serene nature gave me the feeling of being back home, away from everyone. The familiarity of it kept me. Not many people can go to the beach without falling into introspection at some point while there.

“Any new year resolution?”

My thoughts were cut short by her question. I watched her pen move as she stared into her journal attentively. It rested on the front of her legs while she flutter her toes in the sand.

“I’m not sure yet. I’ve never been too big on resolutions honestly.”

I looked out at the waves racing to the shore as children met them before reaching. The journal I brought stayed in my hands with my finger resting in between the page I wrote on.

“I don’t know honestly. I guess. I dunno.”

She laughed lightly. “what about falling in Love this year?”

I could feel her staring at me. Her journal was down and her face was painted with shyness, but she was smiling.

We locked eyes. I gave in and looked away first. Attempting to hide the smile she’d kindled.

She slowly inched her way near me, wrestling through the sand until she leaned her chin on my shoulder. Then she rested her head.

“I think we should fall in love this year.” She said softly. The sun was no longer at our backs, but now facing us.
